Samsung Galaxy Note 7 to get a software update that renders the phone useless

Samsung is going to push out an update for the Galaxy Note 7 that will disable the device. This is a last ditch drastic measure to protect those consumers who have held on to the device despite the danger of the exploding batteries. This seems to be one more blow in the Samsung Note 7 fiasco, which saw the largest fire and burn hazard related consumer electronics recall in US history.

Verizon has announced the incoming update on its web site. After the update, consumers will no longer be able to use the device. The update prevents the ability of the device to be used as a mobile phone, and does not let the battery charge up. However, to make sure that users can stay in touch with their families and friends during the holiday season, and out of consideration to medical professionals during the travel season, Verizon will not be pushing out the update till January 5, 2017.

Users will be able to exchange their devices for a new one even after deactivation. Samsung is still investigating into the reason for the exploding batteries, and an official explanation is anticipated. However tech experts using x-ray and teardowns believe that the problem lies in how there was very little space left around the batteries in the design of the device, which allowed very little room for expansion, which happens to lithium ion batteries over regular use
